RapidSeed for Replicating Systems

RapidSeed for Replicating Systems

Replication is the electronic transfer of data from an on-premise Unitrends backup system to an off-premise Unitrends system, in a private cloud or a public cloud setup. Unitrends offers a disaster recovery public cloud service called Unitrends Cloud (was Vault2Cloud). Replication is achieved with in-flight deduplication and the only blocks transferred over the network are those that have changed or those that are different between the on-premise system and the off-premise system. But in order to achieve effective in-flight deduplication, the initial data set must be transferred to the off-premise location in its entirety. Given the size of the initial dataset, this operation can take a very long time to complete. RapidSeed is the process of transferring the initial dataset to a removable media (disk or NAS) and then using the removable media to “seed” the initial dataset on the off-premise location.

NDMP NAS Protection FAQ

NDMP NAS Protection FAQ

Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) is an open protocol that can be used to access data directly from the storage device for backup and recovery purposes. For Unitrends, NDMP is specifically used to access data on Network-Attached Storage (NAS) devices, or filers. What does Unitrends protect with NDMP? There are several NAS vendors that support the NDMP protocol for backup and recovery of their devices. The specific ones that Unitrends supports with our enterprise-class backup products are: • EMC Celerra • EMC VNX • EMC VNXe • NetApp FASxxxx • NetApp ONTAP 8.x C-Mode (cluster mode) Note 1: EMC Isilon devices are not supported in the 8.0 release. We expect to include additional vendors in the future. Note 2: NetApp ONTAP versions 7.x and 8.x are supported. NetApp cluster mode ensures that highly available NetApp nodes are protected within your backup window, even if there are millions of files.

 before-and-after-commands-specifications

before-and-after-commands-specifications

INTRODUCTION Before and after commands provide a means to add functionality to scheduled and manual backups. This document makes significant references to UNIX shell programming and assumes familiarity with the technology. USER DEFINED COMMANDS Using this feature, you can call scripts or programs on the server before and after the group schedule is run. For security reasons, user initiated backup and restore before and after commands must exist in or below the $BP_BINDIR directory. Also, on multi-user operating systems, the commands are run with the privileges (uid) of the user who initiated the backup. For schedules, the command lines are not modified in any way before being called by the shell. That is, the command is run as: /bin/sh command
