The VMware API for Data Protection is an extremely important API set for backup. It exposes methods to retrieve just the blocks provisioned within a virtual disk of a virtual machine and also exposes the appropriate methods to identify just the blocks that have changed between recovery points to perform incremental and differential backups. Recently VMware confirmed a serious issue involving this API with VMs with Changed Block Tracking (CBT) enabled. The issue opens the possibility for a silent corruption of data that is backed up and the user will only realize this upon a (failed) recovery operation. While a fix has been delivered, the question remains: How can I ensure data recovery given these issues?
