Free stuff is so cool!
Veeam made their “awesome” announcement today – Veeam Backup™ Free Edition. I’ll admit, I downloaded it and have been playing with it today. It’s simple to install and a nice contribution to the virtualization user community. Thumbs up!
Unitrends is contributing to the virtualization community too. If any of you follow us on Spiceworks, you’ve probably already picked up on the Unitrends Enterprise Backup Beta/Bacon pizza thread. We’ve got some power users kicking the tires for us, and at the end of the month we’ll make generally available our new software product.
We’ve really focused on Hyper-V in our new release, including the free edition. Our software deploys in a Hyper-V VM (also on VMware, but hey – this is a Hyper-V blog). We’ve developed a comprehensive product which leverages Microsoft’s VSS (volume shadow-copy services) APIs for snapshotting the volumes within the guest machines. This allows you to fully protect your VM’s without experiencing the problem of having to shut down or suspend them. And we’ve implemented this in a way that achieves cross-volume consistency in your backups. You can also perform point-in-time restores of entire VM’s or granular restores of files and folders within VM’s. You can protect them with Incremental forever strategies, which means you only ever have to run one full backup, then periodic incremental backups thereafter. Unitrends Enterprise Backup will create synthetic full backups as required to meet retention strategies, restore or move your VM’s to local or remote archive storage. Full/Incremental strategies are also available for you if backup windows aren’t a problem.
You can use Unitrends Enterprise Backup free edition to fully protect a number of VM’s forever! Of course, if you need more than that, we’ve got licensed versions as well. But I wanted to tell you about the cool free stuff… I’ll talk more about the flexible new licensing model later.
