Solutions for Healthcare
What's the secret to fully protecting your medical records data?
Those who are accountable for protecting medical records data often wonder if there is a full-featured, cost-effective solution for business continuity, data protection and disaster recovery.
Unitrends and Healthcare Data Protection
Conversation with an Expert
Unitrends' Industry Expert is Daniel Joye, Information Security Consultant, Mindfulware, LLC
Unitrends: In your opinion, what makes data/systems protection and the ability to recover data/systems quickly in this industry so important?
Joye: Unlike most computing departments, hospital data is about patient lives. Life and death decisions are made every day based on data collected, stored and retrieved. HIPAA (and common sense) demands three things for all patient-related data: confidentiality, integrity, and availability. For data backup and recovery systems, this means that the data has to be safe, uncorrupted and easy (and fast) to restore. No one can afford to wait for data.
Unitrends: Based on your experience, what are the trends that you are seeing regarding business continuity in the medical/healthcare industry? How does the Unitrends solution specifically meet the needs of this industry?
Joye: Hospitals remain cost conscious with their IT spending but more than ever need to be able to backup and recover not only files but entire, disparate systems and be able to protect these records for a set amount of time. Aside from the rapid backup/recovery of both files and systems and offsite vaulting capabilities, I have been impressed with the Unitrends solution's ability to reduce the technical man hours for backup and recovery, replace the money for tapes and provide a 100% recoverability for all files and systems it backs up. It can replace the racks of old tapes and the cost of new tapes every 60 days. Over the long haul, this is a cost savings to a facility in both media and man hours in terms of changing and collecting tapes. Also, there is a huge savings in time and money for system recovery in the event of a crash or disaster.
Unitrends: How would you recommend an organization assess the viability of their current business continuity/protection plan and equipment?
Joye: If a facility is in the early stages of DR/business continuity planning or is currently using tapes for backup and archiving, a successful trial of a disk-to-disk appliance such as the Unitrends DPU could start with just one DPU attached to a specialty system. This would allow staff to become comfortable with the solution and study the benefits. Over time, disk-to-disk benefits will be obvious and other systems can then be migrated by simply increasing the storage capacity.
