by Mark Campbell on January 1, 2010

As someone with a passionate interest in server backup for heterogeneous systems, I always find this stuff fascinating.  Some server operating system information from questions asked the audience at Gartner’s Data Center Conference 2009.

What operating systems will the audience invest in the most in the next 5 years:

  • Windows: 45%
  • Linux: 37%
  • UNIX: 14%
  • z/OS: 2%

Which Linux and/or UNIX version is the most strategic to you currently? [Result given in weighted scores.]

  • Red Hat Linux: 140
  • Solaris: 80
  • AIX: 71
  • Novell OES (Novell SUSE Linux): 70
  • HP-UX: 40
  • Oracle Enterprise Linux: 19
  • Other: 29

What are your intentions with respect to Solaris?

  • Don’t use Solaris: 35%
  • Migrating way from Solaris: 30%
  • Solaris is tactical: 25%
  • Solaris is strategic: 10%
