Steve Jobs

In a previous post, I called out that one of the ways we’re trying to create data protection appliances (all-in-one backup, archiving, and disaster recovery appliances) is on Steve Jobs’ Apple model.  In that spirit, here are my top 10 Steve Jobs quotes:

  • “People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully.”
  • “I’m actually as proud of the things we haven’t done as the things [we] have done. Innovation is saying ‘no’ to a 1,000 things.”
  • “Apple’s goal isn’t to make money. Our goal is to design and develop and bring to market good products. We trust as a consequence of that, people will like them, and as another consequence, we’ll make some money. But we’re really clear about what our goals are.”
  • “It’s really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.”
  • “You can’t just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they’ll want something new.”
  • “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”
  • “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.”
  • “Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly and get on with improving your other innovations.”
  • “But good PR educates people. That’s all it is. You can’t con people in this business. The products speak for themselves.”
  • “My job is not to be easy on people. My job is to make them better.”
