Why should I buy a backup appliance? Wow, that question hits me in my wheel house! When pondered, the answer comes after humbling myself and realizing that “I don’t know what I don’t know!” Or, in other words, why throw together components from multiple vendors to create a solution already delivered by a single vendor in an all-in-one backup and continuity appliance?

As a 36-year IT veteran I still am not hesitant to say that I have not done everything, but in that time I have seen a lot. One of the worst experiences in my life occurred when I was a database administrator in New York. My day to day responsibilities took a back seat on February 23, 1993, when the World Trade Center was bombed using a truck parked in the basement garage. Located next door in 7 World Trade Center, it is easy to understand why all heck broke loose in out IT department. Though we were lucky and did not lose data, we knew that if we had, recovery would have been a slow and precarious process.

Our new mission was to urgently develop contingencies that would ensure we could recover our data from this type of disaster. Well, we felt the urgency, but the execution failed us. Three years later we still could not get all of our applications recovered in a consistent manner while meeting our recovery service level agreements. We were using one backup software for applications and another for DASD (yeah, I just aged myself… Direct Access Storage Device) and our “hot site“ tests continued to fail. We learned very quickly that having too many autonomous moving parts is never a good thing. We were living in the old world of data protection.

Wouldn’t it have been a great thing to send everything to a single device? Coordinate the backup schedules from a single user interface? Capture changes? Have access to built-in recovery testing? Show a lower cost of ownership? More time for day-to-day responsibilities of maintaining the applications that run the business? One throat to choke? For me, all those questions are answered with a big time yes!
