Usually in this blog we talk about various events and trends with respect to data protection – particularly focusing on not only the present but the future. Today is going to be a little different.
When Mike (Mike Coney is the CEO of Unitrends) and I joined the Unitrends management team and board of directors, we both had a vision for what the company could become. The backup industry is known for a lot of things – but a focus on delighting customers through an awesome customer experience through both products and service wasn’t one of them. We both knew that Unitrends had the foundation of something amazing – both the people and its technology. But in an industry too often known for “pump and dump” of products and partners and customers, many of the decisions we made were out of step. We decided to invest in creating the best support organization in the industry – rather than off-shoring it to save money. We decided to hire the best engineers and invest in the future – rather than trying to treat the business as a cash cow. We created a marketing and sales organization that was focused on dealing honestly and ethically with buyers.
Fast forward to 2012. We’ve just completed our first quarter. We expected the year-over-year comparables (the comparison of financials of 2012 versus 2011) to be tough – after all, our growth in 2011 (and 2010 for that matter) was record-breaking. But we’ve seen even stronger growth in 2012. The long-term view we took a few years ago is increasingly paying off. Our growth year-over-year for the quarter was over 70% – and our growth in March alone was over 100%. We’re also now profitable. Let me stress that last point – we’re not only growing like a weed, but we’re doing so in a way that allows us to invest even more in this business.
2012 is going to be an absolutely incredible year. We have begun teasing the most significant product announcement in the history of the company – later in Q2 we’ll be releasing more information about what we’re doing. But it’s going to be unique in the industry – it’s going to shatter the boundaries of what data protection offers in terms of capabilities and value. And there’s even more coming later in Q3 and Q4. It’s going to be a an exciting year.
