Unitrends Against The Competition

Why Unitrends?

Our mission – the reason Unitrends exists - is to increase your uptime and confidence in a world where you must do more with less.  We don’t sell you a piece of backup software and tell you to slap it on Windows and figure it all out yourself; we sell cloud-empowered, purpose built, all-in-one backup appliances (hardware and software) that operate on your premise and in AWS and Azure.

Why Unitrends?  Because we’re customer obsessed – one vendor, one throat to choke, and a whole lot more that you can read for yourself below.LA.

Unitrends vs. The Others

Most backup software vendors force IT to manually integrate many products and vendors into a custom solution that leads to more management, more downtime, and more risk to the business. Unitrends provides all-in-one enterprise backup and continuity across the entire solution stack, from the backup server, storage and software, all the way up to the cloud for long-term retention and disaster recovery. The ruthless pursuit of simplicity and highest customer satisfaction rating in the industry allows customers to focus on their business rather than backup.

Top 5 Reasons to Choose Unitrends

Unitrends vs. Veeam

Veeam continues to rely on their marketing engine rather than their technology to generate new sales. Products that Unitrends already has are either being promised for the future or non-existent in Veeam’s portfolio. For example Veeam is late to the game in dealing with physical servers as well as how they manage their content in the cloud, relying exclusively on partners rather than integrating a purpose built cloud offering of their own. Physical + Virtual machine recovery orchestration is also not yet available.

Top 5 Reasons to Choose Unitrends Over Veeam

  • Veeam recommends multiple Windows VMs to deliver what Unitrends integrates into a single solution.
  • Veeam can only dedupe data within the same job. Unitrends offers true global deduplication across the entire environment
  • Unitrends’ tightly integrated software appliances eliminate the labor costs required by Veeam’s less integrated solution.

Unitrends vs. Commvault

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” With that definition Commvault is anything but sophisticated. With IT administrators dealing with a deluge of data growth, shrinking budgets and increased infrastructure complexity, the last thing they want is a backup product to suck them dry of time and budgeted dollars. Commvault’s expensive offering coupled with its complexity is a modern IT administrator’s nightmare.

Top 5 Reasons to Choose Unitrends Over Commvault

  • Commvault has an astonishingly complex user interface, with hundreds of clicks required to perform basic tasks like configuring backup jobs. With Unitrends, it is just a couple of clicks.
  • Unitrends’ solutions are a fraction of the cost of deploying Commvault. A Recovery Series appliance (including integrated hardware, software and support) can often cost less to purchase new than it is to renew your Commvault software licenses. New purchase comparisons can literally be 80% less than Commvault.
  • Unitrends Backup software will save you even more if you want to use your own hardware.
  • Commvault solutions are stitched together by assembling the stack of compute, storage, networking and software – often from different vendors. Finger pointing and shirking accountability by the vendors always leads to dissatisfied customers.
  • Unitrends all-in-one backup appliances are designed to eliminate this pain.
  • Commvault has no managed cloud offering that provides long term retention or Disaster Recovery as a Service.
  • Unitrends Cloud provides a plethora of options from long term retention to disaster recovery and recovery assurance, all provided as a white glove service tailor made to delight customers.
  • Commvault does not provide automation, orchestration or compliance reporting on RTO/RPO – key components required to guarantee recovery in the event of a disruption.
  • With Unitrends, the IT administrator can rest assured that their business will be recovered within their RTO/RPO goals.

Unitrends vs. Barracuda

Barracuda offers limited choices. With only a hardware appliance, limited cloud offerings, an immature software offering, and no recovery assurance, customers who choose Barracuda won’t have flexibility and confidence that their data and applications are fully protected and can be recovered 100% of the time. A complex user interface makes Barracuda customer’s data protection more complex and less dependable than that offered by Unitrends.

Top 5 Reasons to Choose Unitrends Over Barracuda

  • Unitrends Recovery series of backup appliances includes 12 models and scales to 180TB of raw capacity.
  • The largest Barracuda backup appliance provides only 50TB of suggested backup, less than half of Unitrends higher end offerings
  • Unitrends user interface (UI) requires no formal training and allows a single unit to control all local and remote Unitrends products deployed
  • Barracuda’s user interface is very complex - and you need to have full Internet access to get all the functionality of their UI
  • Unitrends Product Support is based entirely in the US, not outsourced to call centers overseas. Unitrends Product Support has a 98% Customer Satisfaction rating.
  • Barracuda struggles with support as measured in both response times and quality
  • Unitrends allows users to integrate to their choice of cloud, including Unitrends corporate cloud, the customer’s own cloud or hyper-scale clouds such as Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure.
  • Barracuda does offer their own cloud but in order to backup anything to a public cloud you must use a multi-step process. Barracuda’s lack of true DRaaS and cloud seeding are their biggest cloud weaknesses.
  • Unitrends Recovery Assurance automates backup verification, multi-system recovery plans, and compliance reporting for ensuring recovery SLAs.
  • Barracuda has no automated way of ensuring that you can recover, let alone meet your RTO goals.

Unitrends vs. Arcserve

In 2014, Computer Associates (CA) spun off their backup products as Arcserve in a last ditch effort to revitalize the dwindling brand in the data protection space. Since then, the company has launched a rigorous campaign that messages Assured Recovery, Arcserve Cloud, Global Deduplication, and All-in-One appliances. These sound awfully similar to the core technology Unitrends customers have depended on for years. These pillars earned Unitrends a ranking as just one of two vendors to make BOTH the DR as a Service and Enterprise Backup Software Gartner Magic Quadrants in 2016—and Arcserve was NOT the other vendor.

Top 5 Reasons to Choose Unitrends Over Arcserve

  • Arcserve’s Assured Recovery leaves backups untested and can only perform a simple integrity check for a single system using Arcserve’s High Availability feature.
  • Unitrends automates backup verification, multi-system recovery plans, and compliance reporting using Recovery Assurance.

Unitrends vs. Zerto

Zerto is not a backup solution, but a replication solution for Disaster Recovery. Zerto drives its marketing around short Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) due to its unique replication methodology. However, achieving RPOs of seconds – as Zerto claims – are rarely achieved given environmental limitations. Additionally, Zerto’s architecture leaves customers paying more and adding risk to their continuity strategy.

Top 5 Reasons to Choose Unitrends Over Zerto

  • Zerto requires a virtual appliance per host – high complexity. Zerto requires an intrusive installation into the vSphere kernel – high risk to production apps and VMware support
  • Zerto requires a Windows machine in the cloud – more management cost and ransomware risk
  • Zerto requires an m4.x Large Windows VM to run in the cloud for replication, adding over $4300 per year to your cloud cost
  • Unitrends Boomerang leverages “Pilot Light” technology that uses no cloud compute until you need to failover
  • Zerto has no failback process. You get to the cloud and cannot come back without using painful 3rd party tools
  • Unitrends Boomerang can return a running machine in the cloud to the on-premises VMware environment in a single-step
  • Zerto only provides granular recovery from cloud storage
  • Unitrends Boomerang brings full VMs back from cloud storage in a single-step, giving confidence that you are not held captive in the cloud
  • Unitrends Cloud offers true SLAs, which cannot be achieved using shared, hyperscale infrastructure like AWS and Azure. Unitrends Cloud with Unitrends Backup software and Recovery Series provide the great alternative.
  • Zerto uses its own (unsupported by VMware) IO filter that leaves all machines in a crash-consistent state (Blue Screen Risk!) They also don't offer enterprise-level capabilities such as seeding and white glove service for DR. They also have no physical support.

Unitrends vs. Veritas Backup Exec

Let’s face it – Symantec, now Veritas Backup Exec is legacy. From lagging in features, being sold across companies several times, lacking cloud offers and a failed attempt at an appliance, Veritas has not kept pace with the industry. Add the complexity of their UI and you are ripe for failure. Veritas Backup Exec lags behind in just about every area of the product. Veritas’ user base has greatly decreased so the very future of the product is much in question.

  • Unitrends Recovery Assurance automates backup verification, multi-system recovery plans, and compliance reporting for ensuring recovery SLAs.
  • Backup Exec has no automated way of ensuring that you recover, nor meet your RTO goals.
