The Unitrends data protection appliances supports all types of storage: DAS (Direct Attached Storage - the internal drives on your servers, workstations, PCs, and networks), NAS (Network Attached Storage - also called filers or network filers), and SAN (System Attached Network.) We also directly support all types of compute platforms: servers, workstations, PCs, and notebooks. There are several fundamental advantages to this

  • Users of your computer infrastructure aren't forced to change the way they work in order for their data to be protected. In other words, a sales person with a notebook computer doesn't have to be unprotected while they are working on a presentation on their notebook. Another example: your IT infrastructure doesn't need to change when you decide to deploy Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 and you heed Microsoft's advice to implement on a server with DAS - you have protection for that server.

  • We support direct NAS protection (i.e., you can protect your NAS directly from our appliance rather than having to go through a client.) In fact, if you are using an open NAS with a supported operating system, you can even put our agents on the NAS itself.

  • We support SAN protection via the SAN-attached client (to avoid "tearing", or open file corruption.)

Our network topology showing our support for the entire compute infrastructure is depicted below.
