Hyper-V R2 Backup and Hyper-V Backup

Our D2D backup appliance provides a network-based backup solution for Microsoft Hyper-V enabling enterprise-class data protection and backup and recovery with an appliance designed from the ground up for small and medium businesses. Unlike competing solutions, Unitrends does not charge on a per-client, per-operating system, or per-feature basis - thus Hyper-V backup and Hyper-V R2 backup comes with no additional licensing fees.

Up-to-Date D2D Hyper-V R2 Backup and Hyper-V BackupMicrosoft Windows Server Hyper V Data Backup

Unitrends supports backup, archiving, and disaster recovery for the following versions of Microsoft Hyper-V:

  • Microsoft Hyper-V Server R2
  • Microsoft Hyper-V Server
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V R2
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V

Hyper-V Backup Architecture

The Hyper-V backup architecture is based upon the VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) - just as the Windows operating systems and applications are - so that an integrated Hyper-V backup architecture is possible at both the virtual and physical machine levels. Unitrends uses this architecture to create not only a heterogeneous Hyper-V backup architecture with the rest of the Windows operating systems and applications but also allows the same system to backup Hyper-V and many more operating systems and applications.

Hyper-V Backup Methods

Hyper-V backup can be accomplished via backup at the GOS (Guest Operating System) or the HOS (Host Operating System) level. GOS-level Hyper-V backup is simply performed by installing a Unitrends lightweight agent within the GOS itself - exactly as if it were a physical system. HOS-level Hyper-V backup is performed at the bare metal and file system basis through using the Microsoft VSS architecture and via pre- and post-commands to backup Hyper-V.

Integrated D2D Hyper-V Backup

Unitrends uses a common D2D backup and recovery engine for providing protection for over 100 different versions of operating systems and applications. This means you can support Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL, Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware, Sun Solaris, Novell OES, Novell Netware, Novell GroupWise, Novell eDirectory, Linux, FreeBSD, Apple MacOS X, IBM pSeries/AIX, HP HP-UX, SCO UnixWare, SCO OpenServer, IBM iSeries/OS400, and SGI IRIX on notebooks, PCs, workstations, and servers and on DAS, NAS, or SAN storage.

All of our D2D backup appliances support all of these operating systems and applications with no "backup tax" - there are no license limitations for the backup support of different operating systems and applications.

A free trial consisting of a Hyper-V-based virtual appliance for the Unitrends backup, archiving, and disaster recovery appliance will be available in September.  An online download and a DVD version will be available.
